How do I locate marriage records?
Answer
Marriage records are kept by county probate courts. There is no statewide index to marriages before 1954. The Ohio History Connection holds some marriage records and will need to know the county where the marriage occurred before we can search for the record. We do not hold copies of all the county probate court records at our archives. Please visit our library catalog to see what county marriage records we hold. Use the name of the county and the word probate in the author field to retrieve a list of county probate court records
If we do not hold records for the county where the marriage would have been registered, you should contact the probate court in the county.
