How do I research Ohio Civil War Service Medals?

Answer

The Ohio History Connection has a few sources to help identify veterans who were awarded the Ohio Civil War service medal. The 1893 Annual Report of the Ohio Adjutant General lists the Ohio Civil War service medals that had not been collected; and we hold two ledgers listing the Ohio Civil War service medals that were sent.

Record of Ohio Civil War service medals sent. [State Archives Series 107].

Please be aware that there are no actual medals to claim. Unlike those in the state of West Virginia, the location of Ohio’s unclaimed medals is unknown.

Please visit our research guide for more information on conducting research at the Ohio History Connection.
