How should I frame my historic documents, photographs and prints?

Answer

Consider making a copy of the item to frame and display. Light damage to historic documents is cumulative over time and cannot be reversed. If you really want to pursue framing the original item, we recommend looking for a framer who is certified by the Professional Picture Framers Association.

Some things that you should request from your framer include:

  • Ask for acid free matt board and backing.
  • Ask for glass or plexiglass that filters UV light.
  • Ask that no adhesives used to construct the matting come into contact with the item you are framing.
  • Always frame historic documents, photographs and prints with mats to prevent the items touching and possibly adhering to the glass.
